In contrast to untreated biomass, treated biomass contains contaminants that are derived from operations such as melamine overlay of particleboard and fiberboard, painting, gluing operations, etc. When these residues are burned in a combustion system they create other harmful pollutants which must be removed from the flue gas air stream.
